Hello. My name is Emily Aaronson. I am 17 years old have been living in the same place for the past 17 years. Worcester. Worcester Massachusetts. Ugh, I hate it here, but I am not allowed to leave for a simple, yet dreadful, reason. I must be adopted. I should tell you my story first though. Then I think you will understand everything I am saying.
On the day of my birth, my mother dropped me off in front of an orphanage with only a note which said “Be safe”. The Caretaker, Mrs. Simpson, found me the next morning and called the local police. The new police chief, who replaced the old chief Brendon Aaronson ,whom died a couple days before, picked up and told her he would be there in a few minutes. When he arrived and saw me he supposedly looked like he was going to start crying and started saying things like “He would of loved to see her”, “Always wanted a daughter”, and “Where’s Mandy?”. Mrs. Simpson asked who Mandy was and the chief told her how much I looked like Brendon and that Mandy would never leave her daughter like this. That started the investigation. A missing person alert was put out for Mandy, but she was nowhere to be found. Even today they are still looking, but have come up with nothing and probably never will. That’s enough of my sob story though. When I was told I broke down and that’s how I got my full name Emily Aaronson. Not that it really matters though, I need to focus on the now and keep the past, well in the past. I also had to worry about today, the first day of my senior year at Doherty Memorial High School. But today felt different. Like something was going to happen. Something that may change my life forever. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I got out of bed and into the shower before Lauren could. Lauren is Mrs. Simpson’s daughter and is the snottiest person in the world. She can’t talk without adding like somewhere in the sentence and flirts with almost every boy she sees. She also believes that anyone from the orphanage is below her. Luck must be on my side because oh yeah, I am in High School With her. Thank goodness I am the only person in the orphanage that is in High School. All the rest of the kids are still in Elementary and Middle school and don’t have to go through the torture of being in High School with Lauren yet. I got into the bathroom just as Lauren was coming out of her room with her towel and robe. I smiled evilly and walked in and locked the door. She then began pounding and “demanding” I open up the door in a high pitched voice. I turned on the shower and let it heat up while I looked at myself in the mirror, judging if this year I can possibly get a boyfriend or not. I ran my hands through my plain brown hair which was sort of wavy. I looked in the mirror and sighed and try to plan which outfit I should wear today. At least I should try to make a good impression, well at least before Lauren ruins it again. I took a quick shower and tied my robe tightly before walking out. Lauren was leaning against the wall glaring at me so of course I smiled sweetly and skipped to my bedroom. As I walked in, I examined what I suppose is the average teenagers room. A complete mess with wait, is that a piece of pizza lying on the floor? I shivered and walked to my closet. I took out a denim skirt that wasn’t too short, but wasn’t too long either and leggings along with a long sleeved white Hollister shirt. Mrs. Simpson believed in hand me downs….a lot. All of my clothes were pretty much Laurens old ones and the stuff that was new, well I had to work for. Mrs. Simpson doesn’t have all that much money, and the money she does spend is pretty much on Lauren and the younger kids. I don’t mind much, I like making sure that the younger kids look good and cute. It’ll definitely give them an advantage at getting out of here. After I was dressed, I slipped on a pair of brown ballet flats and made my way out the door, but not before tripping on nothing. I fell and a bang was heard throughout the house. I heard one of the babies below start crying which made them all start. I ran down the stairs, yelling my apology to Mrs. Simpson who was in the kitchen, and into the baby’s room and tried calming them down. I eventually got them quiet and made my way to the kitchen, picking up a piece of toast and sitting at the table, while I let my hair air dry. After I finished I went back to my room, being as careful as possible not to trip and wake up any more kid’s. I got back without another fall and brushed my hair. I put it into a high pony tail and tied a red ribbon into it. I looked at my overall appearance and smiled, I looked pretty dang good if I must say so myself. I went down the stairs once again and sat in the living room, waiting for Lauren to come down. The other thing was that the orphanage only had two cars. One of the cars was Mrs. Simpson’s which she used to drive the younger children to school and do grocery shopping. Lauren had the second one, which was used to take me and the kids in middle school to school. That usually meant that we had to wait a half hour for Lauren to get down. I looked up as I heard someone walk into the room and saw Sam. Sam is 14 and is in love with drawing. She doesn’t go anywhere without her sketchbook and a pencil. She likes helping Mrs. Simpson take care of the younger children and is usually the peace maker during fights. I smiled at her and she smiled back before sitting next to me. “Good morning Sam. How are you today?” I asked in a cheerful voice. She sighed and said in a tired yet somehow angry voice, “Lauren woke me up with her yelling this morning. Good job on getting the shower before her.” I smiled and leaned back closing my eyes and listened to the sound of pencil to paper as Sam drew. I heard someone else walking in and opened my eyes to see Mrs. Simpson looking excited. She walked over to me and smiled. She said in an excited voice, “Emily, we have a family that would like to meet you after school so make sure you get here early. Even if it means walking home. I will make sure Lauren picks up Sam.” I nodded and sighed. You can’t imagine how many family meetings I have had in my life and this one would probably be another bust. I heard heals clicking on the hardwood floor and knew Lauren was coming. She walked in, still in a foul mood, with a pair of sunglasses on her face and huge earrings in her ears. She also wore a mini skirt the miniest of them all. She snapped her fingers at me and Sam and we followed her out to her car. It wasn’t all that special, just a used black Ford Focus. I got into the passenger side and Sam got into the back. Lauren pulled out of the driveway and turned up the volume. Love Lockdown by Kanye West started playing and Lauren, of course, started singing. After careful consideration, I came up with the conclusion that she sounded like a dying possum. I rolled my eyes and looked out the window into the rain. I loved looking at the trees as they rushed by. The rain blurred the landscape, making patterns on the wet window and distorting the trees to make it look like they were alive. I sighed and continued watching the landscape until we pulled into the middle school. Sam thanked Lauren, whom just said whatever, and got out and ran to her what it would be like to just have one good friend. I haven’t ever actually had a real friend because of what Lauren says about me. I am also not invited to movies or parties so I mostly just stay home and read. I am addicted to Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice. Oh Mr. Darcy just come and take me away! Lauren pulled into the High School, which was completely packed. Everyone wanted to see their friends after the summer break and to claim their parking spots for the year. When Lauren parked, her fan club, or bimbo club as I like to call it, came over and started talking to her about their summers. Lauren talked about how she went on vacation to her Uncle’s house in California and how she met some really hot guy, which she did but still. I rolled my eyes and made my way to the office for my schedule this year. I walked into the office and went up to Mrs. Cope, whom seems to like me for some reason, and asked in a happy voice, “Mrs. Cope may I please have my schedule?” She smiled and went through the papers and removed mine. Before I walked away she yelled to me, “Wait Emily! I need to ask a favor! Can you stay in here for a few minutes?” I nodded and walked to her desk and asked, “Why? I can’t be late on the first day.” She just smiled and said, “I need you to escort some students to their first class. They are brand new and don’t know their way around.” I just shrugged and sat down in the hard, straight backed chairs. I heard the bell to the door jingle and looked up. What I saw was amazing. |

I looked up into the faces of the most beautiful people in the world. The two girls had the prettiest faces I have ever seen in my life and the boys, oh my goodness! They just had to be the hottest guys in the universe. Two guys, one with huge muscles and one with crazy blonde hair, walked over to the two girls, one tall with straight blonde hair and the other short with short spiky hair. The muscular guys walked to the tall pretty girl and put his arm around her while the other went to the spiky haired girl and hugged her from behind.
In the back of the group, just walking into the door must have been a Greek god. He was tall and had messy bronze hair and a perfect body. He flashed a crooked smile at me, which showed perfect white and glistening teeth, and walked to Mrs. Cope’s desk. They talked for a couple minutes and the god took the papers from her and thanked her. He then walked back to his family and was about to leave when Mrs. Cope interrupted them. ” Mr.Poole! Emily here will take you to your first class. If anyone knows everything about the school it is her.” Of course, at that exact moment I had to blush. I smiled and prayed that I covered it up. I stood up and walked over to the group and the bronze haired guy smiled back while the others were staring at me almost….scared? I shrugged it off and introduced myself to the group,”Hello. My name is Emily Aaronson, May I ask what your names are?” Mrs. Simpson always told us that the best way to make friends is to act friendly and polite. The short, pixy-like person stepped in front of me and held out her hand. She said in a cheerful voice, “Hi! My name is Alicia Poole we're going to be great friends!” I smiled and shook her hand, which I must say was extremely cold, and said, “Nice to meet you!” She smiled and stepped back next to her partner which introduced himself next, “Hello. My name is Anthony Griffin. It is nice to…meet you.” I nodded and shook his hand and he stepped back next to Alicia. Next, the big muscular guy stepped up and stuck out his hand and said in a deep voice,” My name is Christopher Poole but you can call me Chris. It is very nice to meet you Emily!” I smiled and said, “Nice to meet you too !” I looked towards the tall, pretty girl and she just said in a snotty voice, “Jasmine Griffin.” I gulped and nodded and said in a nice voice, “Nice to meet you!” And last but not least, I looked at the god. He smiled and said in a velvety voice, “My name is Ethan. It is very nice to meet you as well,Emily.” I shook his hand and he looked almost pained. I that his eyes seemed to darken, but yet again I shrugged it off. I quickly said good bye to Mrs. Cope so we wouldn’t be late. I heard the couples talking in the back of the group, but Ethan just stood beside me and walked at the same pace I did. I tried starting up a conversation, “So Ethan, Where did you move here from?” Ethan looked at me and smiled and said,” We moved here from Oregon about a month ago. My father, COnnor, got a good offer from the hospital downtown UMass I beleive and moved us to Massachusetts. He likes the Subrban City mix. “So how long have you lived here?” Ethan asked in a sweet, heart melting voice. I smiled sadly,” I have lived here all of my life.” He nodded and looked questioningly at me, probably trying to get me to tell him why I was sad. I ignored the look he gave me and walked forward to our first period class, Calculus. I hate this class with a passion and would be overjoyed if someone outlawed it one day. I saw Jasmine and Chris walk ahead thinking that they must have another class. I shrugged and lead the rest into the loud room. When they walked in everyone stopped talking. Some people glared at me while others openly stared at the group behind me. I walked to my seat while they all talked to the teacher. The teacher then introduced them to the class and then told them to sit in an open seat. Surprisingly, Ethan sat next to me while Anthony and Alicia sat in the row ahead, directly in front of us. I took out my Calculus book and opened it to the first chapter and began reading. A piece of folded paper flew at me a couple minutes later and I saw Laurens messy handwriting. I looked around and saw she was in the row in front of me and sitting to the right of Aliciam. I read it quickly before I could get caught. Don’t tell me you have already like forced them to be your friend. I rolled my eyes and wrote quickly, I didn’t force them. Please don’t ruin this for me. She scoffed when she saw the note and gave me an evil smile before writing something, throw it back, and then turn to Alicia and whisper something into her ear. I opened the note and almost started crying when I saw what she wrote. We’ll see how much they like you after I like tell them everything. Oh and don’t think you even have a like chance with Ethan. You’re like way too ugly for him. I crumpled up the note with one hand and threw it into my bag, folded my arms onto the table and put my head down in the process. I felt another piece of paper land on my desk and opened it to see a nice, fancy writing scrawled on it. What was written on it made me smile. What’s wrong? –Ethan At least someone cared about me. I wrote a quick note back and tossed it to him. He caught it and smiled at the note and nodded at me. You will probably find out soon enough from your sister. Thanks for caring though. I started reading my book again and was about to start my home work when yet another piece of paper landed on my desk. Man, I must be really popular today. I don’t believe anything she says Emily. Don’t worry. –Alicia I gasped at the note and looked at Alicia who was giggling. I shook my head and began my homework, hoping to have it done so I can rest after the upcoming visit. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Three classes and many notes later, Alicia, Anthony, Ethan, and I were walking to the cafeteria talking about what we did over the summers. I learned that Alicia loves to shop, Anthony loves History, and Ethan likes composing music. I walked over to the long line with my new friends when I heard the one person that I wish would just disappear, Lauren. I heard her heals clacking on the floor and her bimbo club following behind. Lauren came over and stood in front of me and looked at Edward and said, “Hey Emily! Who are your like friends?” I closed my eyes and took a deep breath and said, “Lauren, these are the Poole's. They just moved here from Oregon.” She smiled seductively at Ethan and said, “I could give you a personal tour of the town if you would like.” He just looked at me for help and shook his head and said a quick, “No thank you!” I scooted up in line and everyone followed, but Lauren and her bimbos stood there in shock. That was the first time anyone had ever rejected Lauren. I snickered and got my lunch then sat at the empty table in the corner. The Poole's sat next to me and we began talking again. “So Emily what are you doing tonight?” Ethan asked while picking apart a hamburger. What don't eat? I then thought about their bodies and everything clicked. Of course they didn’t eat. I thought about telling them the truth about the meeting and decided on it. “I have a meeting with some people tonight. You guys?” Alicia perked up and said, “Same here!” I smiled and the lunch bell rang. The rest of the classes passed by in a blur and when it was Gym, the last period of the day, I went to the office and signed out, telling Mrs. Cope I had to go home for some family business. I began walking home and when I finally got there I finished up some homework and took a shower. I changed into some clean, nice clothes, which I have dubbed my meeting clothes and layed back onto my bed. I heard a knock on the door and I heard Mrs. Simpson yell, “One minute!” I heard the door open and Mrs. Simpson saying how glad she was they were here and all that jazz. I walked down the stairs slowly and peeked around the corner. What I saw completely surprised me. |

I heard someone squeal and was tackled in a hug. I patted the little pixy’s head and said, “Hey Alicia! What are you doing here?” Alicia just helped me up and jumped around in circles saying or should I say screaming, “YES YES YES!!!”
Anthony, whom was standing with the rest of the family just inside the doorway, came over to Alicia and put his hands on her shoulders, which immediately calmed her. Anthony looked at me with a smile and said, “We are the people that are here to visit you.” I gasped and looked at Mrs. Simpson who just smiled and nodded. I squealed and started jumping around which made Alicia jump around. We were both screaming, “OMG OMG OMG!!!!” when I heard someone clear their throat. I turned around to see who interrupted my moment and gasped. I saw the most stunning couple in probably the whole room staring at me with bright smiles. I walked over and said in a happy voice, “Hello! My name is Emily Aaronson. You must be Dr. Poole and you are?” I gestured towards the woman on the last part and she smiled. Connor finished shaking my hand and then the woman took it while introducing herself. “My name is Sarah , dear. It’s very nice to meet you. The children have been talking about you since they got home.” I blushed on her last comment and shook her hand. I heard the front door open and in came Ethan, in all of his godlike glory. I smiled at him and smiled back. I knew I was going to be great friends with Ethan from the moment I met him. The front door opened again, seriously does anyone knock anymore, and in came the wicked witch of the west herself. Lauren came waltzing in like she was a princess, while dragging Sam by the arm. I heard Sam sob and I ran to her and gave her a hug. She leaned against me and said in a voice that broke my heart, “Emily can I please talk to you upstairs?” At the end of her sentence she broke down again. I looked up to Connor and Sarh and they both nodded and smiled. I took Sam’s hand and lead her upstairs. When we got to her room I locked the door and sat her on the bed I sat onto the bed next to her and looked into her eyes. Tears were waiting to fall and I wiped them away and said in a soft voice, “Sam what’s wrong?” She sobbed harder and fell back onto her bed and held her face in the pillow. Suddenly I felt very angry and said, “Was it Lauren?” She nodded and sobbed even harder, if it was possible, and pushed the pillow onto her face. I rubbed her back before getting up and walking to the door and yelling, “LAUREN!” I heard her giggle from downstairs and ran down, trying my hardest not to fall. When I reached the bottom, I saw that she was almost draped across Ethan’s lap. He looked very uncomfortable and I became very angry. What was this emotion? Jealousy? I shook it off and walked over to Lauren. I walked over, glad that the adults were in Mrs. Simpson’s office, and said in an angry voice, “May I speak to you upstairs?” She just giggled and got closer to Ethan and said, “Can’t you see I’m like busy? Oh wait you wouldn’t know, seeing as you’ve never had a boyfriend before.” I blushed and gritted my teeth. Oh if only I could just scream at her right now, but no. I had to be perfect. I took a deep breath and was about to speak when Alicia appeared next to me, looking equally as mad as I did. Alicia began speaking with as much authority as her little body could muster, “Lauren, can’t you see that Ethan is very uncomfortable having you so close? Not only that, but how could you make a little girl cry!” She looked like she was about to blow up, but Anthony came over again and stood between us He put a hand on each of our shoulders and a sudden wave of calm crashed over me. I relaxed and said once again, “Please Lauren just come upstairs and tell me what happened so I can help Sam.” She finally groaned and got up mumbling curses about me under her breath. I walked behind her and then I noticed that both Anthony and Alicia were walking behind me. They were looking around in fascination, almost like they haven’t ever been in an orphanage before. I had came to the conclusion myself, earlier, that the Poole children had to of been adopted from an orphanage or something. I mean Anthony and Jasmine even had a different last name! I went ahead of Lauren, glaring at her as I passed, and knocked on Sam’s door. I heard her sobbing still and a faint “Come in” came from inside. When I came in, I saw that Sam had buried herself under her covers and still had her face in the pillow. I sat on her single bed next to her and looked at Alicia with pleading eyes, begging her to tell me what to do. She kneeled down next to where Sam’s head was and crossed her arms, laying them on the bed and putting her chin on them. She said in a soothing voice, “Hey Sam! I’m Alicia! What’s wrong?” Sam said something in the pillow that sounded like Lauren. Alicia continued, “What did she say to you?” Sam lifted up her head and screamed right in Alicia’s face with tears going everywhere, “SHE SAID I DON’T DESERVE TO BE ALIVE! THAT NO ONE WANTS ME! She said my drawings are horrible and that I don’t deserve anything I am getting here.” The last two sentences were said softly, so soft I could barely hear them, and she collapsed onto the bed, shaking with sobs Alnthony walked over and kneeled next to Alicia. He started stroking Sam’s hair and she visibly calmed down. Sam’s eyes closed after a minute and her breathing evened out. We stood there silent, thinking over everything Sam just said. Suddenly everything clicked and I turned to Lauren in the doorway, whom had a smirk on her face, with fire in my eyes. All I wanted to do was punch her. As I was about to go after her, I felt two pairs of hands holding me back and I heard someone running up the stairs. The next thing I know, Ethan is in front of me and saying I should calm down before I regret it. I fought against them for a minute before I just stopped and glared at Lauren. She smirked and walked out of the room, but before she was fully in her room she yelled, “I meant everything I like said!” That was when I lost it. I somehow got around Ethan and launched myself through the door. What I wasn’t expecting was another pair of arms to snatch me in mid air and holding me against their owner’s chest. I tried getting away but the person held me tighter and I finally just went limp. The person, who I saw was Chris, put me down and put himself between Laurens door and me. I heard Lauren snicker from behind her door and tried to go at her, but Alicia got my wrist and dragged me down the stairs. I heard the other Poole’s walking behind and making comments like “She will be very interesting at home” and “At least I won’t have to teach her how to fight”. I sat down on the couch in the living room with my arms crossed. Anthony sat next to me and Ethan sat on the other side. Alicia sat next to Anthony and smiled at me. Chris sat on the rug and watched the TV, which was showing some baseball game, while Jasmine sat on the couch filing her nails. After ten minutes I calmed down and relaxed my body, putting my hands in my lap. I had a feeling of drowsiness come over me and I closed my eyes. I felt someone put an arm around me and I put my head on their shoulder. After five minutes of silence, I heard someone walk into the room and giggle. I knew it was Lauren, but I didn’t have the will power to make myself get up from this comfy position. “He he he what did she do pay you guys? I mean seriously you guys follow her around like lost puppies, pathetic if I must say so myself.” I heard someone make a faint growling sound from next to me and then I heard Chris say from in front of me, “Why would she have to pay us? She is our friend and soon to be sibling.” Lauren laughed wickedly and said in a high pitched voice, “Ha! Yeah right! Who would want her in their family! She is just like Sam, a failure! No one wants her.” Then Alicia spoke up, her voice angry, “Lauren, you have had a family all your life while Sam and Emily haven’t. Give them a break! From what it looks like, you’re the one that gets everything here. You act like a princess, but you’re not. Get over yourself!” Everything went silent as Lauren took in all of the words said to her. After a minute, right when Lauren was about to answer it sounded like; the sound of three pairs of shoes could be heard entering the room. Conner’s voice was heard throughout the room, “It is official. We can take her home tonight if she would like. Seeing as she is already asleep we won’t wake her up, Ethan would you mind carrying her?” I wanted to blush, but I was so close to unconsciousness that it was impossible. I felt someone get up from next to me, the person who was my pillow, and that completely woke me up, or at least a little. I opened my eyes and saw everyone staring at me. I stood up and almost fell back down, but someone put an arm around my shoulders to support me. I looked up and saw Ethan smiling down at me and looking into my eyes. His eyes were pitch black and looked like he was in pain, but his face showed different emotions, happiness and excitement. I leaned into him and he supported my weight with ease. I heard Lauren gasp and turned to her. She was gawking at Ethan’s arm around my waist and I had to smirk. “Mrs. Simpson, can you please go get Sam? We would like to take her tonight as well.” Mrs. Simpson smiled at me, probably seeing the surprise. Anthony followed her up the stairs and came back down holding Sam bridal style. I let go of Ethan and slowly made my way to Mrs. Simpson and whispered in her ear, “Thank you and goodbye.” She smiled at me and nodded. I went over to Lauren and gave her a tiny hug and whispered in her ear, “Bitch.” She growled and I made my way towards the door and tripped, but was caught and brought up again to a standing position. I looked up at Ethan once again and he smiled at me. He leaned me against him and led me outside to two cars. One was a shiny silver Volvo and the other was a black Mercedes. Ethan opened the passenger door to the Volvo and I slid into the seat. I heard the back door open and looked back to seeAnthony sliding in along with Alicia. They put Sam in the middle and buckled her up and let her head fall onto his shoulder. I heard Connor and Sarah putting some stuff into the trunk and then they came around to the front of the car and Emily Marie Griffin and Sam Alex Griffin .” I closed my eyes and fell into unconsciousness as Debussy’s famous Clair De Lune filled the car. |

I was awoken from my nap to the sound of a car door slamming shut. I opened my eyes and was met with the sight of a huge, beautiful white mansion. There was a small garden from what I could see and the security light was shining on the driveway. I felt movement below me and looked up to find a pair of topaz eyes staring into my own. It took me a minute to remember that the Poole’s had adopted me and I snuggled into Ethan’s chest.
His arms tightened around me and he whispered, “Go to sleep, Emily. When you wake up we will all be here.” I nodded into his chest and whispered, “Thank you.” Before I was dragged into unconsciousness once again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ What seemed like minutes later, I opened my eyes and was met by royal blue walls and furniture made from what looked like cherry wood. I sat up, letting the silky sheets slide off my body by themselves, and looked around the beautiful room. In the middle of the room was a fluffy-looking rug that covered just about the whole floor, which was a light shade of wood. A flat screen TV was attached to the wall and had a stereo and shelf of CDs under it. On the wall to the left of that was a dresser and a door which lead to what I believe was the closet. A vase was sitting on the dresser containing what looked like freesias and lilies. On the opposite wall to the dresser was a huge window that overlooked the forest. There was a pair of beautiful white side-shutters adorning the sides of the window and a transparent-looking pair of drapes that were elegantly tied in the center. I slid out of the bed, being careful not to trip over the rug, and opened my door. I was met by a picture of the ocean on the opposite wall of the hall and carefully closed my door so as not to wake anyone else up. I heard the news going downstairs and carefully, still being as quiet as possible, walked down. Two flights of stairs later, my feet touched solid ground and I followed my ears into the living room. Two matching couches were sitting parallel to each other and a coffee table was separating them. Two bean bags were also situated in front of the big screen TV and an abandoned set of Wii controllers were sitting on the ground. I heard a loud banging sound and turned towards the stairs again. I took a sniff of the air and the smell of bacon was very strong. My stomach growled and I followed the smell into yet another room. This room, the kitchen, had an island in the center as well as a table sitting next to a wall which was completely made of glass. On the island was a stove as well as a sink. Behind that, was the fridge and oven, along with plenty of counter-top space. Sarah was standing behind the counter flipping the bacon and smiled at me as I took a seat at the table. “Good Morning Sarah. How are you this morning?” I asked kindly. I didn’t particularly want to give a bad impression on my first day. “I am doing very good. How about you?” she replied. I shrugged and said, “I am doing okay. I love my room by the way.” I smiled and opened the newspaper to the weather. Oh big surprise! It’s going to rain. Sarah finished the food as I was flipping to the sports section of the paper and I began eating. After about 5 minutes, I heard someone else come down the stairs and turned to the door. Sam entered the room with puffy eyes and looked very confused. When she looked at me she smiled and walked over to the table as well. She sat next to me and whispered, “Where am I?” I laughed at the way she said it and said, “The Poole’s adopted you as well Sam. This is Sarah,” I gestured to Sarah as I said this, whom smiled, “and our father is Connor. You have met our siblings before.” She nodded and started eating the breakfast Sarah sat in front of her. I was almost finished with my breakfast when everyone else walked into the kitchen. They were all talking and playing around, barely noticing Sam and I sitting at the table. I finished eating and got up to put my dish in the sink when, of course, I had to trip on the carpet in front of the sink. I started falling forward and dropped my plate and silverware to the floor. When it hit the floor, the contents that were left on it like the little pieces of egg and jam from my toast, flew up and landed in my hair and on my face. When I finished my oh-so-graceful fall, everyone started laughing at me and pointing. Tears sprang to my eyes and I threw the plate into the sink and ran up the stairs. I heard Alicia and Ethan call my name, but I didn’t listen. When I got into my room I slammed my door and threw myself face first onto the bed. I wasn’t crying because I hurt myself or anything, falling was almost second nature to me, but the fact that I embarrassed myself in front of my family on my first day and they laughed. Laughed! I heard someone knock on the door a couple minutes later, but I ignored them. I always do this to myself! I embarrass myself in front of everyone I am just starting to know and then they are too embarrassed to be seen around me. It was like that way in first grade, it’s going to be the same now. That would really suck if my own family disowned me on the first day. I punched my pillow angrily and layed on my stomach, looking out of the window. I watched the rain hitting the window and the fog beginning to form over the distant mountains. The pine trees were swaying gently in the wind, giving the entire scene a picture perfect look. I slowly rose from my bed and walked over to the window. I undid the lock and pushed the window open with all of my strength, letting the fresh air blow through my hair. I stepped up onto the window sill and onto the roof. It was a little scary looking down, but after a minute I got used to it and looked around for a spot to sit. I saw the perfect area to my right, but I would have to jump over a part of the roof that was a straight drop to the ground. I gulped and took a deep breath. I could do this. I walked over the small ledge and jumped. I landed a couple of inches from the drop and sighed in relief. I walked up the side of the roof and sat down in between what looked like a window to the attic and another room. I pulled my legs up to my chest and looked over the landscape once again. Looking out the window in my room definitely wasn’t the same as seeing it from the outside. It wasn’t raining as hard as it was when I was inside and didn’t affect me at all. I was only sitting out there for about 20 minutes when I heard the window on the right side of me open. I heard some shuffling around and then Chris was standing directly in front of me. He smiled and sat in front of me, ‘blocking my way out’ a voice in the back of my head told me. I attempted to smile, but it probably came out wrong. I was still upset about what happened, even if I found a distraction. He looked out on the landscape and leaned his head back against the wall. “You know, everyone is going crazy looking for you. We all went to apologize and come to find your window open and you missing.” He said casually. I shrugged and layed back onto the slightly slanted roof. Angry gray clouds were swirling above us, ready to drop the millions of raindrops on Worcester. How depressing. I sighed and said, “Shouldn’t you be dragging me inside or making me explain myself. Normal people don’t just sit out here when it is about to start pouring.” I looked at him questioningly and he chuckled. “If you haven’t already noticed Emily, me and my family aren’t exactly what you would call normal.” I nodded and we both left each other to their own thoughts. After a minute, he stood up and leaned against the window he just came out of. “I come up here to think all the time. Everyone has their own spot to just relax and clear their head and of course you would have one too. I will kindly share with you if you would like.” I smiled and hoped that at least that one came out right. “I would like that a lot Chris. Thanks.” We were silent for what seemed like hours, but it was only minutes. We finally broke it when the rain started coming down in what felt like bullets. He smiled down at me and offered me his hand, which I gladly took. He held onto it until we were safely inside of the room her came in before. I looked around and noticed a guitar, violin, and a keyboard were set up along with music stands. This must be the music room, I thought to myself. I followed Chris to the door when he suddenly stopped. “Connor is calling a family meeting.” He said with an emotionless tone. I nodded and followed him down the stairs and into the living room. Everyone’s faces brightened up when I walked into the room, but fell after they saw the expression on my own. I made it so my face was completely stoic. It didn’t show anything I was feeling and that probably worried them. I took a seat on the couch next to Anthony and Alici and saw Ethan sigh. Connor walked into the room and smiled when he saw everyone there. “Well, I have called this meeting to welcome Emily and Sam into the family. We are very glad to have you in the family.” Everyone nodded in agreement at Connor’s words. He continued, “Even though the incident wasn’t a very good welcoming to the family, but we are all hoping to start over fresh and new. Next, I would like to discuss the schooling issue. Emily is in the high school so she has not problem, but Sam is still in middle school and will need a ride. I would like to propose the idea of Alice and Jasper driving her every morning and Rosalie and Emmett picking her up in the afternoon.” Both couples nodded in agreement, even though Jasmine didn’t look very happy about it, and Alicia looked simply overjoyed. The whole mood of the room changed when Alicia got a blank, faraway look in her eyes. She gasped a couple seconds later and everything turned back to normal. She looked into Ethan’s eyes and he seemed to be having an internal conversation with her. “Alicia are you feeling alright?” I asked with concern lacing every word I spoke. I knew something was wrong by the way the other Poole’s were giving quick glances at each other. She smiled faintly and said in a pained voice, “It is only a stomach ache Emily. Nothing to worry about.” I nodded even though I didn’t believe one word that she said. Connor cleared his throat and said, “Okay everyone. I think it is time for bed.” He gave a look to Alicia that I couldn’t understand and they all nodded, mumbling agreements. I shrugged and walked up to my room, closing the door softly. I locked it and made my way over to my dresser. I pulled on a pair of long sleeved pajamas that had the juicy couture logo on them. I could only imagine how much these cost, but shrugged it off. On top of my dresser, next to the vase with the flowers, was a brand new Mac computer. I ran my hand over the smooth surface and picked it up gently. I walked over to my bed and sat it down. I flipped the screen open and clicked the power button. After it finished booting up, I started exploring the many buttons and apps on it. A window for IM popped up and I saw it was Sam. The rest of the Poole’s minus Connor and Sarah were on. Emily: Hey Sam. What’s Up? Sam: Nothing. I was just wondering if you noticed something fishy going on. Emily: Yeah I know! I was actually going to ask you that lol Sam: Yeah. Oh I’m being invited to a group chat with everyone. I’ll invite you, one sec. The window disappeared as Sam exited out, but then reappeared with everyone else on as well. Chris: Hey Guys. So how was your first day as a Poole/Griffin? Emily:Chris, do I have to answer that question? Chris is just being nosey. Alicia: Guys let Sam speak! Sam: Um…Thanks Al. I have had an awesome day actually. A lot better than being stuck in the orphanage with Lauren. Anthony: Good. So Emily…where did you go earlier? Ethan: Yeah, we looked everywhere. Chris: You guys are just jealous I found her first you guys. Ethan: Yeah I’m so jealous of you Chris. –rolls eyes- Emily: I just went somewhere to think. No where special. Sam: That’s what you want us to think Bella. Emily: Oh no I was only out with my secret Fiance. We were secretly making out in the forest. –rolls eyes- Chris: Damn Emily! Didn’t know you had someone like that. Ethan: What’s his name I will kill him Anthony: Emily, did he hurt you in any way? Emily: -laughs- You guys, it’s called sarcasm. Anthony/Ethan/Chris: Oh… Sam: I am going to bed. Night guys Everyone: Night Sam Emily: I am going to go too…night. I exited out of the chat and closed up the computer. I got up and put it onto my dresser again and made my way back to my comfy bed. I must of missed dinner earlier because my stomach was growling like crazy. I didn’t care though, I was way too tired to get up and eat. That was my last thought before I was in dreamland. |

I woke up to someone once again knocking on my door. I slipped out of bed and opened it a little to see Connor smiling at me on the other side. “Good Morning Emily! I hope you slept well. Sarah and I were wondering if you would like to eat breakfast with us before I go to work and if I could possibly talk to you in a little while.” Connor said in a voice that only held caring and concern for me.
I nodded and opened my door, following him down the stairs and to the kitchen. When we walked in I saw Sam already eating and talking to Sarah about her old family, or what she could remember from them. I sat in the chair opposite of hers and Sarah and Connor sat on either side of me. I began eating my eggs, which Sarah brought over when she sat down, and began eating. Connor began talking after a couple minutes, “So…how do you guys like the sound of a little family outing tonight? We could all go see a movie or go to the Natick Mall or something.” I shrugged and continued eating while looking at my plate. I didn’t hear anything except the scraping of forks to plates and I found that very odd, usually there is a video game going on or yelling or something! “Where is everyone else?” I said just loud enough for them to hear me. Connor smiled at me and said, “They are all at school. We thought we would keep them home yesterday so you guys could just get to know each other. You and Sam are allowed to stay out for the next two weeks to get adjusted. We have all of your homework being sent home tonight so you guys can get started on it.” I nodded and finished eating. I got up and rinsed off my plate before putting it in the dishwasher and starting to walk upstairs. I heard someone walking behind me and turned around to see Connor. He smiled again and said, “Did you forget about our little meeting in my office?” I nodded and followed him in. I sat in one of the big leather chairs and stared at some of the paintings on the wall. They looked just like the ones in the halls, very old. Connor leaned on the edge of his desk and crossed his arms in front of him and watched me look at the paintings. He began talking after a couple of minutes, which caused me to look at him. “Emily, I know you are having a hard time adjusting to all of this. I read in your files that you haven’t had a family like ours before and it will take some time and effort on your part, but I think you will fit in perfectly. I just want you to know that you can talk to me anytime. Sarah would like you to know you can talk to her as well. Just please don’t lock yourself in your room and read all the time. Yes I do encourage reading, but like I said, it is going to take effort on your part to make this transition smoother.” I nodded my head and brought my knees up to my chest and arms around them. I heard him sigh and sit in his swiveling chair on the other side of his desk. He brought his hands up to his chin and rested his head on them, looking at me, almost reading me. “How have you been feeling lately?” “Fine.” I lied. He chuckled and said in an authoritative voice, “Emily please tell me the truth. You are a very bad liar.” I closed my eyes and said, “It’s nothing. Just nightmares.” He chuckled and got up from his chair, walking around to the book shelf, looking through the books.“Night mares? Is that all they were? With all the screaming and yelling and thrashing around you would think someone was murdering you.” I blushed at what he said and said, “I’m sorry if I kept any of you awake. I usually don’t ever have nightmares.” It has only been since I moved here I finished in my mind. He sighed and smiled, “Emily you didn’t keep any of us awake, trust me. I am just worried about you. Have you looked in the mirror today? You look like you were up all night and let me guess…you still feel tired right now?” I blushed, but nodded. It was just better telling him the truth. He somehow had a way of getting me to tell him everything. He sighed and stood in front of me, placing the book he was holding on the desk, with a calculating look on his face. “Emily why don’t you get ready for the day? I think I am going to take you with me to work to make sure everything is going alright. Then I can have Alicia and Anthony pick you up after school. Chris, Jasmine, and Ethan have to go and get some groceries.” I nodded and then got up from the "Connor do you think there’s something wrong with me?” I said in a hurt voice. I heard him walk towards me and then he was hugging me. I buried my face in his shirt, letting a couple tears that had to be shed or else I would go on emotional overload, and wrapped my arms around him. I felt like I was 5, but so much has happened over the last couple of days, the last couple of years, I had to let it out. Thinking about the last couple of years I broke down and cried harder. He rubbed my back and tried to get me to calm down by rubbing my back soothingly. When I calmed down enough where he could talk and I could listen he said in a soothing voice, “Emily go take a shower and then just get into a pair of jeans and a t shirt. Then we can leave and after I give you a check up and figure out what’s happening, and it could just be the transition for all we know, I will give you something to calm you down and sleep. Then you should be fine, ok?” I nodded my head and let him go, wiping my face with my sleeves and then ran out of the room and into mine. I took a quick shower and got into a comfortable pair of jeans and a white Abercrombie t-shirt. I put on a pair of tennis shoes and my hair into a pony tail before putting on a sweater and going downstairs. I sat in the front room and pulled my knees up to my chest again, watching the news and relaxing. Connor came down 15 minutes later and told me I could bring a book if I want. I got the next book to the Charlaine Harris series called “Living Dead in Dallas” and put it into an Aeropostale bag. I walked out onto the porch and walked around the driveway to the garage where Connor was waiting. I got into the Black Mercedes and buckled up. When I was all ready, Connor zoomed out of the driveway and through the trees. It was raining once again and I watched them. The rain acted like a lullaby and I fell asleep. I woke up a couple minutes later to someone shaking me. I sat up and saw that Connorpulled over and had a worried expression on his face. I blushed and said, “Sorry! I didn’t mean to fall asleep. Sorry if I did anything.” He sighed and felt my head before re turning the car back on and continuing driving. After a couple of minutes I decided to start some sort of conversation, “So what did I do exactly?” Connor chuckled and said in a calm voice, “Nothing really. Your breathing just got really heavy and you started shivering. I thought it was just the cold so I turned on the heat, but you continued. That was when I pulled over and woke you up. That’s how they have all been starting I think.” I nodded and looked back out the window. I looked at the time and calculated we would be there in about a half an hour. I closed my eyes and was just about to fall asleep when Connor spoke again, “Let’s not go to sleep again just yet, ok? When we get to my work and I can give you the check up and everything then you can rest.” I nodded again and tried to sit up straight. After I did I stared out the front window at all the cars ahead and passing us. We drove into Worcester 10 minutes later and after another 10 minutes pulled into the hospital. I walked with Connor to his office, while all the nurses looked at me curiously. I blushed and kept my head down, staring at the scoffed checkered flooring. We arrived at a door a couple minutes later with ‘Dr. C. Poole’ written on the outside. Connor opened the door and his office was just like any other doctor’s. It had a big desk with a computer as well as comfy looking couches and armchairs. I looked to Connor and he motioned for me to sit on the couch. I did as I was told and layed back onto it, making myself comfortable. Connor went over to his desk and typed some stuff onto the computer before staring at the screen intently. “Ok I don’t have any appointments for a couple of hours so let’s go do your check up now so I can make sure the medicine works when you do get to sleep.” Connor said in a serious voice. I nodded and stood up. I followed him out of the door and down the hall again. We got to a part of the hospital near the Emergency Room and he opened a door and allowed me in. I sat on the bed that was there and sat with my legs criss crossed in front of me with my hands in my lap. Connor brought a stethoscope and the thing you see into people eyes, ears, and mouth with and put them next to me. Next he went into a cabinet and took out a needle along with two vials. I gulped and he must have heard because he turned around and gave me a reassuring smile. He walked back over and checked my eyes, ears, and mouth and wrote checks on my medical record. He then took the stethoscope and put it to my heart and listened. He mumbled something to himself sounding like, “Heart rate is a little too fast.” And wrote something onto the paper. He checked my lungs and put a check next to them. Now was the part I dreaded, the blood test. He smiled reassuringly at me again before getting a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol and putting it onto my arm. He then got the needle and held it to my arm then stopped. He looked at me and said softly, “Bella maybe you should look away.” I nodded and looked at one of the pictures on the wall. I felt a pinch and was tempted to look, but Connor’s words rang in my head. After about a minute, I felt a slight pinch again and then a bandage being put onto it. I looked down at my arm and saw the bandage was over a cotton ball which was cushioning it, making it so it wasn’t very tight. I looked up and saw Connor looking over my records again and then he sighed and looked at me again and said, “it looks like you need to get a tetanus shot along with one other. I am also going to get the stuff that will make you fall asleep. I will be right back.” I nodded and he left the room. He returned a couple minutes later carrying three syringes with three vials of liquid. I gulped again and he just smiled. He tucked one of the syringes and liquid into his pocket and put the other two on the bed next to me. “Ok Emily, one of these shots supposedly makes it feel like you can feel it running through your veins and slight drowsiness. The other is the Tetanus shot which just makes your arm sore. If it gets too bad or the places where the shots are given are itchy you need to get me or a nurse immediately, ok?” I nodded and he filled one of the syringes with the liquid. He quickly, without telling me, put it into my arm. I winced, but it wasn’t too bad, that was probably the tetanus shot. Next, he filled the other and looked at me saying, “This is probably going to hurt, sorry.” He quickly stuck my arm as he said sorry and I felt it go into my arm. It burned for a minute and I could feel it spread into my body. I shivered from the feeling, but got up anyway. I really just wanted to fall asleep right now, really bad. Connor put band aids onto the little marks left from the needles and put a hand on the small of my back leading me out of the room. When he opened the door I went straight to the couch and layed back. I shivered and Connor noticed because he got the afghan from the back of the couch and put it over me. He took out one of my arms and put the liquid into the last syringe before quickly giving it to me and putting a band aid over it. I instantly felt like I was going to fall asleep right then. He covered me up fully and kissed me on the forehead. “Good night Emily.” “ ‘Night dad.” Was the last thing I said before I was completely asleep. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I woke up to someone lightly shaking my shoulder trying to get me to wake up. I kept my eyes closed and groggily said, “What?” I heard someone chuckle and then Connor’s voice say, "Emily, it’s time to wake up. You got to go eat some lunch and then you can go back to sleep.” I shook my head and tried to go back to sleep. I felt someone putting their hand through my hair and the Connor asked again, “Emily, will you please get up? I need you to eat something. Especially after I drew a lot of blood.” I tried sitting up, but it felt like my head was spinning so I layed back down. My arm hurt and my whole body felt like crap. I whimpered a little and covered my face with the blanket and curled into a ball. I couple minutes later someone knocked on the door and then I heard Connor talking to someone. He said thank you after a couple of minutes and then closed the door. I felt someone pick me up and squeaked before feeling myself being put onto a chair in a sitting position. I opened my eyes and covered them again, stupid light! “I want to go back to sleep!” I whined like a little 6 year old that wanted to go on the slide one more time. Connor chuckled and said just one word, “Eat.” I looked down and saw that he had a hospital tray sent that contained macaroni and cheese, Jello, and apple juice. I ate my macaroni and cheese silently then ate my Jello. After I was completely finished I took a sip of apple juice and left the rest for later. I got up and walked back to the couch plopping myself back down and falling back asleep. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I woke up after what seemed like an hour later to someone knocking on Connor’s door. He opened it and when I peeked over my blanket I saw it was Alicia and Anthony. I groaned and covered myself back up. I heard Anthony laugh and Alicia skipped over and screamed right next to my ear, “EMILY COME ON!!!!” I rolled over and fell off the couch. I glared at Alicia, jumped back onto the couch, threw the blanket over myself, and then closed my eyes again. I heard Connor laugh and he said in an amused voice, “Good luck with her. She’s been really whiny this afternoon. I had to carry her just to get her to eat her lunch.” I heard Anthony sigh and then someone sit on the couch next to me. “Emily, come on. I just need you to walk to the car and then I can carry you into the house when we get home.” I whined, “Nooooo, I don’t want to go.” Connor chuckled again and said, “I told you. She’s probably going to be like this for a couple more hours. Just let her sleep when she wants to. Don’t force her to do anything. Oh, and definitely don’t let her near Chris.” I felt someone pick me up and put me on two legs and then wrap there arm around me and begin leading me out of the hospital. I heard Alicia babbling on about shoes to Jasper as we walked out while I was barely awake and very irritable. When we got to the car, Anthony let me lay on the back seats without a seatbelt and said he would drive carefully. Alicia got into the passenger seat and then we were off. I fell asleep before we hit the city limits. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I woke up in my bed and I heard everyone downstairs playing guitar hero. I got up, still sore from the shots and blood drawn, and walked downstairs slowly. When I got down, I went into the kitchen and got a banana before walking into the front room to watch. I curled up on the carpet watching them hit the different keys and yelling at each other for ‘cheating’. Connor got home a half an hour later and asked to speak to me in his office again. I walked up behind him and closed his door when I got inside. I sat in the same chair I did last time and he took out something from his bag and put it into his pocket. He walked around and stood in front of me with his arms crossed again. “So Emily how did you sleep?” I shrugged and said, “Pretty good I guess. I just hurt all over from the stupid shots.” He chuckled and smiled at me. “Well, my colleagues and I believe we have found out what is wrong. Have you ever heard of night terrors?” I nodded and said, “Aren’t they like nightmares, but it causes your body to react?” Connor smiled and nodded. “That is exactly what they are. I believe that is what is happening. It is more common in children, but there are cases where adults and teenagers develop it. It usually happens when you are stressed out and things like that.” I nodded again and waited for him to continue. “I called Mrs. Simpson after you left and she said you were perfectly fine while at the orphanage and I have come to the conclusion that stress has been causing them. It also didn’t help that the kids were putting so much pressure on you yesterday, which caused them to increase.” I nodded and said in a soft voice, “What do I do then?” He smiled and took out a bottle of pills from his pocket. “This will help you sleep the whole night. At least eight hours and then you should be fine. After you get situated I promise it will get better.” I nodded and smiled. I stood up and walked up to him and said, “Thanks Dad.” |

Flop comes 3JT, turn comes Q case, river comes A for set over set over set losing to a straight. It was rediculous. there are so many sick setups you can get.. |
