A/N: I wrote this in the 8th grade for an english project so don't be too harsh
Scene 1: Into the Camp
Narrator: (Narrator is not seen until end of play) In the year 1943, the Nazi finally reaches to the house of Nesia’s family, a small one of her mother, father, her younger sister, and she, all were strong believers of the Jewish faith. Yet like everyone else they where afraid of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party, so they kept their faith a secret. But then someone tipped the Nazis off that they were Jews and on the morning of October, the pounding on the door woke everyone up, even the heavy sleeper that Nesia’s sister was, woke up with alarm. They knew it was pointless of hiding now for they had no time; the Nazi’s soldiers were now kicking the door open. The next events were a blur to Nesia. The soldiers separated her mother, sister, and her from her dad, put them on a box cart train. And went without food and water for three days (miraculously they all survive but are in poor condition) they got to the camp where she was separated with her sister for she was 9 years old. Her mother was shot on the spot because she protested that her sister was older. Nesia was alone when she walked to the ghettos, the day before was her birthday, and Nesia was 12 years old.
(The scene opens in a house that is not even finished, just some concrete and no furniture. A couple of Nazi soldiers stand in the corner. Nesia is in the corner with her knees to her chest. Gila, a happy, fifteen year Jewish girl, comes to were Nesia is and sit downs in front of her.)
Gila: Hey what’s wrong with you? (Pause then speaks with a playful tone) Did someone take your doll?
Nesia: (half smiles) No one took my doll. (points finger towards Nazi soldiers) But they took everything. (starts crying) And now I’m alone here and I don’t even know where here is.
Gila: (place hand on Nesia’s back) Well I’ll tell two things. One you are in a concentration camp that is watched by the Nazi soldiers. The rule here is to work hard and you won’t be killed (Nesia shudders at the thought) don’t worry I will help you. (place other hand on shoulder and smiles) And two you are not alone anymore.
(Nesia stops crying and smiles, bell rings)
Gila: That’s the bell we better hurry before they stop passing the bread out.
(Nesia wipes her tears as Gila pulls her up and to the table where they were passing the bread out. Gila goes to one lady who has a bit more bread than everyone else, Nesia following.)
Gila: Sophie this is Nesia, she with me.
Sophie: (smiles) So how are you Nesia?
Nesia: (smiles) I’m fine (Sophie hands Nesia a loaf and a half of a loaf bread)
Gila: (whispers to Nesia) You need to eat this fast because no one is supposed to get this much bread. (Nesia look down at the bread frowning)
Nesia: Is this lunch?
Gila: (Shaking her head) No this is breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so savor it. They (snarling at the guards) don’t think we need much food so they give us this. (Exits off stage with Nesia, blackout)
Narrator: Nesia didn’t yet really understand the true horrors to the camp and slept restlessly through the night with fits from her nightmares. And the next morning she awoke with a kick from the guard and was lead to construction site. She worked with Gila and a 14-year-old boy.
(Lights up revealing a foundation of a house in the process of being made, a 14 year-old boy digging out dirt from the boxed area of the outline of the foundation)
Gila: Nesia this is Peter (points at boy digging), Peter this Nesia (points at Nesia)
Peter: Hello Nesia (smiles then gets backs to work)
Nesia: Hello. (starts working)
Gila: Peters not from around here aren’t you, Peter.
Peter: (stops working and turns to Gila) You don’t have to tell the whole world that you know.
Gila: Well you’re not, and you’re not even Jewish.
Nesia: (stops working) You’re not?
Peter: (scowling at Gila) I’m not.
Nesia: Then why are you here?
Peter: I came here with my family for a vacation but a robber was arrested in public and to get out of trouble he pointed at us saying we were Jewish, when in fact we are Christian. My parents died trying to prove we are Christians and I got sent here.
Nesia: Wow, that is really bad, bad as mine. (smiles for assurance and Peter smiles back, then went back from work)
Narrator: Over the next few weeks, Nesia saw people come and go through the concentration camps. Many people died at the hand of the S.S. Guards, for either, torture of stealing food, not working hard enough, or just sheer pleaser. Many Jews died because of starvation, but lucky for Nesia, Sophie gave her extra food. Nesia began to ponder why Sophie was treating them so nicely, but she soon learned from Gila that Sophie was actually a Jew in disguised as a Nazi to help people survive. Nesia soon realized that if she never met Sophie she might be dead. And the scariest thing is that when she was working at the convention belt, she sees people get hurt and the guards take them away and she never sees them again. She prayed that neither she nor her friends would ever get hurt and leave her, but it seems her prayer was unanswered. (Blackout.)
