We Are (Responsible)
By James_Padfoot
You say we're not responsible, but we are.
It's all about power and taking control.
Breaking the will and braving the soul.
There's nothing left.
- 'We Are' by Ana Johnsson
"I've been watching you," said a hard voice, cutting Albus' day dream short. He raised his eyes to meet his brother's. At his silence, Aberforth elaborated, "You and that Grindelwald. There's something more than friendship going on," and here his tone become snide, "or at least on your part, and, it's not natural!" By the end of his sentence, Aberforth was a whisper away from a scream.
Albus Dumbledore stared at his brother, his gaze calculating. Finally, he said, "There is no wrong in dreaming big. We want to change the world for the better; nothing is wrong with ambition." As usual, Albus sidestepped the issue, diverting Aberforth's attention. And as usual, it worked.
"A Slytherin in Gryffindor robes, that's what you are!"
Albus' blue eyes, the very same hue as his brother's, glinted with a hard edge. "You can't possibly be so foolish as to think we only possess singular traits!"
"The hat should have sorted you there. You lying snake! Do you believe me ignorant to not know what transpires between the both of you?!"
"There.is.nothing.going.on.between.us," came a sharp, bitter reply.
"Oho. Poor, poor Albie. Yet you still let him use you."
"How does any of this matter to you?"
"It matters when it takes you away from your true responsibility: your family! In case it slipped your slipshod memory, it's our duty to take care of Arianna!"
Albus' lip curved, sneering, he said, "Oh yes. I completely forgot how everyday father sits in Azkaban for his lack of impulse control, how my sister was violated by muggles, how my mother died protecting my mental sister, and what an utter prat my brother has become! Here, take my uttermost apology for trying to have my own life!"
Aberforth made a motion to draw his wand, but didn't. Even so, Albus had his own wand aimed exactly at Aberforth's heart at the latter's hesitation. A look of pure rage and betrayal came over Aberforth's features even as Albus hastily stowed his wand away.
Before anything else could happen, the door opened, and at its precipice stood Gellert Grindelwald. His eyes took in the two brothers, both faces red, and Aberforth shaking with anger. He opened his mouth, presumably to ask what was going on, but never got the chance, because after recovering from the momentary shock of the intrusion, Aberforth screamed at them both.
"YOU! GET THE BLOODY FUCK OUT OF MY HOUSE!"
Without even waiting to see if Grindelwald did leave, he turned to his brother. "AND YOU! You can't take Arianna with you, she's in no state to travel, and when you're trying to make your clever little speeches, trying to whip up your little band of followers who's going to make sure she eats and is happy?! You think you're so heroic, 'for the greater good', my arse! You don't care at all if one young girl gets neglected do you, never mind that she is your sister! Your responsibility is HERE, and you act like the only reason you're sad mother is dead is because YOU CAN'T GO ON HOLIDAY WITH YOUR LITTLE BOYFRIEND HERE!"
Grindelwald took a sharp in take of breath, his face turning from mild to dangerously angry. He shut the door with a pronounced click and raised his voice.
"Abby!!!!!" came another voice. Arianna was running full tilt at her brother, her lips curved into an ecstatic smile. She stopped short, clearly sensing something wrong, but her presence was unnoticed by Aberforth and Grindelwald. Albus flicked his gaze at his sister, his face drained of all color, his eyes now glued to that of his Durmstrang friend.
"You foolish imbecile! You don't understand, do you, don't understand at all. Your stupid little brain cannot possibly comprehend the changes Albus and I can achieve; you have no right to assume the role of an obstacle! When we're done, you won't have to hide your sister, WE wouldn't have to hide from muggles! And if one little girl has to be sacrificed, so be it!"
"Gellert!" Albus' admonishment was weak at best. For he knew it to be true, but hearing Grindelwald say them still caused a pang deep within him.
Aberforth had no compunction this time in drawing his wand. "TAKE THAT BACK!"
"Idiot. You think you can stop us? We'll be great wizards, and you'll forever herd sheep!"
"Expelliarmus!"
"No, Aberforth!"
"CRUCIO!"
"NO, GELLERT, STOP!"
Albus' shields broke against the onslaught of the Cruciatus curse, so he ran to Grindelwald. Aberforth's scream resounded around the room, and Albus knocked hard into Grindelwald.
"Stop Gellert, you're hurting him!"
"He needs to learn, Albus!" responded the other, shoving Albus hard onto the ground. There was a homicidal glint in Grindelwald's eyes that scared Albus beyond fear he never knew existed. Aberforth was already back on his feet, and Albus could not hear the spells, but only see flashes of light flying between the two boys. To his left, Arianna looked distressed, and Albus recognized the disaster that would ensue if this was not stopped. It all needed to stop now.
"Enough, stop!" but his pleas were unheard. His wand hand felt heavy, even though he had raised his wand to his brother earlier, he had never any intention to cast. And so he knew what he must do. Raise his wand to his brother and the man he loved. He regained his senses; if he had blocked out sound before, it now exploded in his ears.
And then suddenly, even though he had meant to bring peace, he was fighting, offensive spells flying, hitting his brother, hitting Gellert; there were cutting curses and paralyzing jinxes, he fell, Aberforth moved around evading Gellert's curses with a pronounced limp in his left leg, and suddenly, there was a minor explosion that seemed to rock the living room.
No one was left standing after it. It was more of a quake inside then out. Albus felt as if a gong had gone off inside of him, rather than on the house. His magical core seized up, froze, then was released. He felt drained. It was like he had forgotten to breathe and now his body was making up for the lack of oxygen.
Grindelwald was first on his feet. He didn't look angry anymore. There was a mixture of shock and fear on his face. "Al..Al…Albus…"
Fearful, Albus sat up, turning to look in the direction of Gellert's gaze. For the second time in five minutes, he forgot to breathe. Arianna's eyes were open, but there was no life in them as she stared blankly into the ceiling. Across from her Aberforth seemed to be groaning silently, as he tried to get up. Obviously, his brother did not know yet, had not realized.
"Aurors…aurors will be here. All the noise."
"It's sound proofed you idiot," came Aberforth's scathing voice. As he got to his feet, it was only then that Grindelwald's words struck him odd. His back was turned to Arianna. "What'd we need Aurors for?"
"That," said Grindelwald, pointing towards the dead girl.
Aberforth turned, his gaze falling immediately to the still body of his sister. He let out a wail of anguish, that Albus thought came from inside him as well.
"Who cast…" began Albus, but the question refused to be formed on his lips. His eyes met Gellert's, but the boy shook his head earnestly.
Aberforth dropped to her side, cradling her lifeless body, his eyes accusing at the two standing wizards. "You killed my sister! One of you killed my sister!"
"No Abe, we don't know--"
"Don't you dare tell me we don't know Albus! Both of you wanted to do her in, and I bet it was him!"
"I should go," were the only words Grindelwald could say, as he too stared at the dead body, and fled.
Albus stood torn, between his family and his lover, who he wasn't sure loved him back, and made a split second decision that would forever shape his life.
He ran after Gellert Grindelwald, who left him anyway.
